【詞匯精講】forgive表示“原諒;寬恕”時,可作及物或不及物動詞,表示“對不起;請原諒”時是及物動詞。

限制性定語從句(3)

一、限制性定語從句和非限制性定語從句的區(qū)別

根據(jù)定語從句與先行詞關(guān)系的緊密程度不同,可將定語從句分為限制性定語從句和非限制性定語從句。一般說來,限制性定語從句在意義上是先行詞不可缺少的定語,如果省略,所修飾的先行詞往往不明確,這種定語從句前面一般不用逗號;而非限制性定語從句往往是對先行詞的附加說明,為先行詞提供補充信息,即使去掉,也不會影響先行詞的明確性,它與主句之間通常用逗號隔開。

We knew the scientist who had studied the problem.

我們了解那個研究過該問題的科學(xué)家。(若把從句去掉,則不明白是哪位科學(xué)家)

We knew the physical scientist Hawking,who had studied the problem.

我們了解物理科學(xué)家霍金,他研究過該問題。(若把從句去掉,仍然知道是哪位科學(xué)家)

His daughter who is in Boston now is coming home next week.

他在波士頓的女兒下星期回來。(說明他不止一個女兒)

His daughter,who is in Boston now,is coming home next week.

他女兒現(xiàn)在在波士頓,下星期回來。(說明他只有一個女兒)

二、使用限制性定語從句需要注意的幾個問題

1.在much或all后用that,不用 which,作定語從句的賓語時可以省略。

Mr Brown demanded to know all that had happened.

布朗先生要求知道所有發(fā)生的事情。

There was not much (that) I could do for him.

我能為他做的事情不多。

2.關(guān)系代詞作動詞的間接賓語時,用to或for。

正:Who is the girl that you bought the flowers for?

誤:Who is the girl that you bought the flowers?

你給她買花的那個女孩是誰?

注意:無關(guān)系代詞時,也要用to或for。例如:

The lady I wrote the poem for was my sister.

我為她寫詩的那個女孩是我姐姐。

3.正式英語中,介詞可置于從句之首,whom或 which之前。

Do you know the poet to whom our teacher referred just now?

你知道我們老師剛才提到的那個詩人嗎?

He asked a question to which there was no answer.

他問了一個沒有答案的問題。

注意:介詞不可置于who或that之前。

4.定語從句的謂語如果是以介詞結(jié)尾的短語動詞,則不可把介詞移至從句之首。

正:He received the email he was looking forward to.

誤:He received the email to which he was looking forward.

他收到了一直期盼的信件。

正:This is the old man I am looking after.

誤:This is the old man after whom I am looking.

這就是我照顧的那位老人。
