1 though conj. 雖然;盡管;即使;然而
[觀察]Though I have lived here for a long time, I still don't feel Canadian.
盡管我在這兒已經(jīng)生活了很長(zhǎng)時(shí)間,但我仍感覺(jué)不像加拿大人。
He will come on time even though it rains.即使下雨,他也會(huì)準(zhǔn)時(shí)來(lái)的。
[探究] though意為“_______________________”,引導(dǎo)讓步狀語(yǔ)從句。它可與even或as連用,構(gòu)成短語(yǔ)even though和as though,分別譯為“________”和“________”.
[拓展] though還可作副詞,意為“不過(guò),可是,然而”,常用于句尾。

[探究] (1)praise可作動(dòng)詞,用于對(duì)人、某項(xiàng)成就的贊揚(yáng)或上級(jí)對(duì)下級(jí)的贊許。其后接名詞或代詞作賓語(yǔ),不接動(dòng)詞不定式或that從句。常用結(jié)構(gòu):praise sb./sth. for (doing) sth. 因(做)某事而表?yè)P(yáng)/稱贊某人/某物。
Guests praised the cook for his cooking.客人稱贊那位廚師的烹飪技術(shù)。
(2)praise還可以用作名詞,表示對(duì)人或事物的“稱贊;贊美;贊揚(yáng)”,一般用作不可數(shù)名詞。
Too much praise is not good for a child.過(guò)多的表?yè)P(yáng)對(duì)孩子不利。
3 private adj. 私人的;私有的

[探究] private含有隱私的意思,多指不愿意與別人分享,常在句中作定語(yǔ)或表語(yǔ)。

1 In China, being modest is a virtue.
在中國(guó),謙虛是一種美德。
[探究] being是be 的現(xiàn)在分詞形式,和后面的形容詞連用一起作主語(yǔ)。
Being honest may not get you a lot of friends, but it will always get you the right ones.
誠(chéng)實(shí)可能不會(huì)讓你交到很多朋友,但它總是讓你交到適合的朋友。
2 In both China and North America, it is polite to offer an elderly person a seat on the bus.

[探究] (1)offer sb. sth.意為“(主動(dòng))為某人提供某物”,也可以表示為offer sth. to sb.。其中,offer作動(dòng)詞,意為“提供;供應(yīng)”,通常指主動(dòng)提供東西或機(jī)會(huì)等。
(2)elderly為形容詞,意為“年紀(jì)較大的;上了年紀(jì)的”,是對(duì)上了年紀(jì)的人的一種尊稱。the elderly 泛指“老人或上了年紀(jì)的人”。
