1. The water was deep, and he could not get his axe back. 水很深,他不能找回他的斧子。
get back此處意為“取回”,跟代詞時(shí)置于中間,跟名詞時(shí)可置于中間,也可置于back后。
I got my pen back yesterday. 昨天我找回了我的鋼筆。
2. He had only one axe, and he needed it to make his living. 他只有一把斧子,他需要靠它來謀生。
make one’s/ living意為“謀生”,make也可換成動(dòng)詞earn。
He made a living by drawing. 他以畫畫為生。
3. The spirit went down a third time and returned with the woodcutter’s old axe. 精靈又一次潛下去,帶著樵夫的舊斧子回到水面。
“不定冠詞+序數(shù)詞”表示相對(duì)前一個(gè)而言的“又一,再一”,為泛指。
I have read the book twice, but I want to read a third time. 這本書我讀了兩遍了,但是我還想再讀一遍。
“定冠詞+序數(shù)詞”則表示按順序排列的“第……次”,為特指。
It is the fifth time that I have met him. 這是我第五次和他見面了。
