1.This style was created in the nineteenth century by an American poet.
in the nineteenth century意為“在19世紀”,相當于in the 1800s。
表示“在某世紀”時,用“in+the+序數(shù)詞+century”,表示“在某世紀某年代”時,用“in+the+數(shù)字+-s/-’s”。
【注意】用數(shù)字表示“某世紀”時,不要丟掉定冠詞the。
2.This kind of poem always talks about a single topic.
◆如果主語是由“限定詞+kind/type/sort of+名詞”構(gòu)成,隨后的動詞形式按以下規(guī)則:
(1)在a kind/sort/type of,this kind/sort/type of之后通常跟可數(shù)名詞單數(shù)或不可數(shù)名詞,動詞用單數(shù)形式。
【注意】在這種結(jié)構(gòu)中,通常不用復(fù)數(shù)名詞。
(2)在these kinds of,many/several kinds of之后,通常用復(fù)數(shù)名詞或不可數(shù)名詞,動詞都用復(fù)數(shù)形式。
◆single為形容詞,意為“單一的,單獨的”。
【拓展】a/one single+單數(shù)名詞=only one+單數(shù)名詞。
3.Each line has a set number of words.
a number of意為“一些”,與some或several同義,后面往往接可數(shù)名詞復(fù)數(shù)。a number of短語作主語時,謂語動詞往往用復(fù)數(shù)形式。句中的set是過去分詞起形容詞作用,意為“固定的,規(guī)定的”,修飾后面的名詞number。
【拓展】the number of意為“……的數(shù)目”,后接名詞復(fù)數(shù)。以the number of短語作主語時,謂語動詞使用單數(shù)形式。
4.Let’s look at another two poems as examples.
another two poems意為“另外兩首詩”,與two more poems同義,“another+數(shù)詞+名詞復(fù)數(shù)”相當于“數(shù)詞+more+名詞復(fù)數(shù)”,表示“再幾個……”。
