◆the well-known writer and educator在句中作主語Helen Keller的同位語,起解釋說明的作用。這里的writer和educator指的是同一個人,所以只用了一個冠詞。
◆at the age of意為“在……歲時”,of后接基數(shù)詞,有時也可省略為“at+基數(shù)詞”或“at age+基數(shù)詞”。at(the age of)/at age…可位于句首或句末,在功能上相當于when引導的時間狀語從句。
2.When she was nineteen months old,Helen fell ill.
fall ill意為“生病”,fall用作系動詞,意為“進入(某種狀態(tài))”,其后常接形容詞作表語。
【注意】fall ill是短暫性動作,不能和表示一段時間的狀語連用,若與表示一段時間的狀語連用,應改為表示持續(xù)狀態(tài)的be ill或be sick。
