語法精析
一、基本特征
1.情態(tài)動詞有一定的詞義，不能單獨作謂語，需和實義動詞或系動詞一起作謂語。
She can speak English though she is six.盡管她才6歲，但她會說英語。
2.情態(tài)動詞一般無人稱和數(shù)的變化，個別情態(tài)動詞有現(xiàn)在時和過去時兩種時態(tài)變化。
They must be in the classroom.他們一定在教室里。
3.構成否定句時，not放在其后面。
The young man can’t carry the big stone.這個年輕人搬不動那塊大石頭。
4.情態(tài)動詞后接動詞原形。
You will do as I told you.你得照我說的去做。
二、基本用法
1.can與be able to
(1)can只有現(xiàn)在時和過去時(could)，而be able to則有更多的時態(tài)變化，在將來時、完成時和非謂語動詞中只能用be able to。
(2)can一般指自身具有的能力，而be able to則表示經(jīng)過一段時間的努力后所具有的能力，相當于manage to do或succeed in doing。
(3)在否定結構中was/were able to與could沒有區(qū)別。
This time I failed in the exam，but I’ll be able to pass the exam next time.
這次我考試不及格，但下次考試我能及格。(經(jīng)過努力)
She ran fast but she couldn’t/wasn’t able to catch the bus.
她跑得很快可還是沒能趕上公交車。
2.need的用法
(1)need作情態(tài)動詞時，后跟動詞原形，表示“需要，有必要”，無人稱和數(shù)的變化，多用于疑問句、否定句或條件句中。
—Need I finish the work today?
—Yes，you must/have to./No，you needn’t.
——我需要今天干完這活嗎？
——是的，你必須干完。/不用，你不必干完。
There’s plenty of time.You needn’t drive so fast.
時間很充足，你不必開這么快。
注意：由need引起的一般疑問句，肯定回答常用must或have to；否定回答常用needn’t。
(2)作實義動詞
need作實義動詞時，后可接名詞、動名詞、不定式等，有人稱、時態(tài)和數(shù)的變化。
The bike needs repairing.
＝The bike needs to be repaired.
這輛自行車需要修理。
