The type of writing of the text is literary journalism.
Literary journalism usually describes real historical events and real characters. The usage of the figures of speech can stimulate readers' feelings and thus touch the readers.

1 ruin n. & vt. 破壞；毀壞

The whole city lay in ruins after the earthquake，which made us awake all night.

【詞語辨析】ruin，damage 與 destroy
（1）ruin 嚴重地“毀壞”，側(cè)重指破壞事物的內(nèi)在價值。
The illness has ruined my life. 這個病毀掉了我的生活。
（2）damage 部分性“破壞”“損壞”，一般還可以修復。
You have damaged my bike；you’d better get it repaired.
你弄壞了我的自行車，你最好找人修一修。
（3）destroy 徹底地“破壞”“毀壞”，一般不能或很難再修復。
The bomb completely destroyed that building.
炸彈徹底炸毀了那棟建筑。
2 shock n. & vt.
（1）n. 震驚；令人震驚的事；休克
搭配：in shock 震驚，吃驚
He’s still in a state of shock. 他至今還驚魂未定。
The news of his death came as a great shock to everyone. 他去世的消息讓所有人都非常震驚。
She was taken to hospital suffering from shock. 她因休克被送到醫(yī)院。
（2）vt.（使）震驚
搭配：It shocks sb. to see/hear... 看到/ 聽到……使某人震驚。
It shocked them to hear that he had gone abroad.
聽說他出國的消息，他們驚訝不已。
