不定式作定語和狀語
課堂要點精析
動詞不定式由“to+動詞原形”構(gòu)成。這里的to是不定式標(biāo)志,無意義,有時可省略。其否定形式為“not+動詞不定式”。不定式既有名詞、形容詞或副詞的某些語法功能,又有動詞的時態(tài)和語態(tài)的特點及作用。
1.不定式的時態(tài)和語態(tài)
◆Father warned me not to drive after drinking.
父親警告我不要酒后開車。
◆It’s a great honour to be invited to do the voluntary work for the disabled.
被邀請為殘疾人做志愿服務(wù),我感到很榮幸。
◆I happened to have read your advertisement and decided to apply for the job.
我碰巧讀了您的廣告,決定申請這份工作。
◆The little boy pretended to be reading the book when his teacher entered the classroom.
老師走進(jìn)教室時小男孩假裝正在讀書。
2.不定式作定語
動詞不定式作定語時,應(yīng)置于被修飾的名詞或代詞后面。以下幾種情況下常使用不定式作定語:
(1)表示將來的動作時。根據(jù)需要,不定式可用主動或被動形式,但其含義有所不同。
◆ I have a lot of homework to do.
我有很多家庭作業(yè)要做。(不定式to do的動作執(zhí)行者是I)
◆The building to be built next month will be a modern hospital.
下個月要建的那座樓將是一個現(xiàn)代化的醫(yī)院。(不定式to be built的動作執(zhí)行者是“別人”,其后可以加上by sb.,因此只能用不定式的被動形式作后置定語)
(2)放在序數(shù)詞、形容詞最高級,the last, the only, no, any, all等后或被這些詞修飾的名詞/代詞后,且不定式與其邏輯主語為主謂關(guān)系。
◆ He is the best man to do the job.
他是做這項工作的最佳人選。
(3)被修飾詞是表示抽象意義的名詞時,常用不定式作后置定語,且不定式常用主動形式。常見的此類名詞有ability, chance, idea, right, evidence, attempt, plan, way, reason, opportunity, time等。
◆ I want to have a chance to further my study abroad.
我想得到一次去國外進(jìn)修的機(jī)會。
3.不定式作狀語
(1)不定式作原因狀語多用在某些表示喜、怒、哀、樂等的形容詞后。
◆I’m very glad to be invited to attend the meeting.
我很高興被邀請參加這個會議。
(2)不定式作目的狀語時可與so as to/in order to替換,但so as to一般不可置于句首。
◆To know something about English is one thing; to know English is quite another.
懂一點英語是一回事;掌握英語完全是另一回事。
(3)不定式作結(jié)果狀語常表示意想不到的結(jié)果,常用only to do。
◆I went to see him, only to learn that he had left the city the night before.
我去看他,不料聽人家說他已經(jīng)在前夜離開了這個城市。
