2. How did the writer end up missing both events?

Read the first paragraph and answer the questions.

1. What time did the writer arrive at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001?

The writer arrived at the World Trade Center at around 8:30 a.m.

2. What did the writer decide to do first? 

The writer decided to get a coffee first.

3. How far away was the coffee place from his office?

It was two blocks east from his office.

Language points

1. I was about to go up when I decided to get a coffee first.在我即將上去時, 我決定先喝杯咖啡。 

be about to do sth.意為“正要 / 馬上就要做某事”,可表示將來的情況,但它表達的是最近的將來。

be about to do sth. when ... 意為“正要/馬上就要做某事,這時……”。

2. I went to my favorite coffee place even though it  was two blocks east from my office. 

even though “即使,雖然,盡管”,用于引導(dǎo)讓步狀語從句。

block  n. 街區(qū)

e.g. He’s the best teacher,  even though he has the least experience. 他雖然經(jīng)驗最少, 卻是最好的老師。

3. We stared in disbelief at the black smoke rising above the burning building. 

stare  v. 盯著看,凝視表示看得比較仔細(xì),有時候也帶有吃驚的意味去看,常與at,  into連用。

e.g. Don’t stare at me like that.

別那樣盯著我看。

in disbelief 不相信,疑惑,懷疑

e.g. Tamara stared at him in disbelief, shaking her head. 

塔瑪拉一邊狐疑地盯著他看, 一邊搖著頭。

above為介詞,表示“在……上面”,與below意思相反,說明物體之間的上下位置關(guān)系,不觸及表面,也不表示垂直關(guān)系。

Look! A plane is flying above your head.

看!一架飛機正在你的頭頂上方飛行。

4. I felt lucky to be alive. 

alive 一般作表語;也可以作后置定語或賓補“活(著)的;在世的;(繼續(xù))存在的”;

反義詞:dead

alive在句中做什么成分?

e.g. People alive should try their best to live better. 

活下來的人應(yīng)該盡力生活得更好。(后置定語)
